Smart Moves to Stay One Step Ahead of Fraudsters

Authored By: Bridget Staffileno, VP Brand Engagement on 4/11/2025

From hidden skimmers at gas stations to suspicious websites and phishing texts, fraud is more common than ever. But with some savvy tips and the right tools, you can stay one step ahead of the scammers.

Here’s how fraud happens and what you can do to stop it.

Skimmers: Sneaky Devices That Steal Your Info

Skimmers are tiny gadgets that fraudsters attach to ATMs or gas pumps to steal your card information. When you insert or swipe your card, these devices capture your card information without you even realizing it.

What to do:

Before using any card reader, give it a quick wiggle. If it feels loose, misaligned, or looks suspicious, don’t take the risk. Walk away and report it.

Phishing Scams: Calls, Texts & Emails Pretending to Be Legit

Scammers are getting slick by sending fake calls, emails, and texts that look like they’re from your credit union, a delivery service, bridge tolls, or even a friend.

What to know:

Jolt will NEVER ask for social security numbers, or other personal info over the phone or text. When in doubt, don’t click, hang up and call Jolt yourself.

Online Shopping & Data Breaches: Hidden Dangers

Shopping online is convenient, but it can also be risky if you’re not careful. Fraud can occur when you enter your card information on an unsecured website or when a company experiences a data breach.

How to protect yourself:

Stick to well-known, secure websites (look for “https” in the URL), avoid saving your card info online, and turn on real-time card alerts so you’re instantly notified of any activity.
